Iraq Body Count figures for August 10: 94 killed

IBC total to-date for August, 2013: 295 civilians killed

At least seven more killed today in three relatively minor attacks across the country. Also, surprising nobody, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria claimed responsibility for Saturday’s wave of violence (94 dead according to IBC):

“The Islamic State mobilised… in Baghdad and the southern states and others to convey a quick message of deterrence on the third day of Eid al-Fitr” in response to security forces’ operations, a statement posted on forums late on Sunday said.

Right, ISIS is deterring the government from going after them, that’s why they’re killing people. Sure. Apparently our State Department is offering $10 million for information leading to the capture or killing of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS. Would it be funny or just absurd if we had to give that money to one of the Jabhat al-Nusrah (Syria’s al-Qaeda affiliate) fighters who are still pissed that al-Baghdadi clamed control of their organization? Or one of the former Jabhat al-Nusrah fighters who went over to Ahrar al-Sham (a Syrian Salafi movement that is not affiliated with al-Qaeda) because al-Baghdadi claimed control of their organization?
