I’m normally a lot quicker on the uptake with these things, so I feel bad that I’m only just acknowledging the massive and devastating flooding that has hit Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia over the past several days. It’s the worst flooding the region has suffered in at least 120 years, leaving 40 dead and tens of thousands of people displaced. The flooding in Bosnia and Herzegovina is severe enough that it may be displacing landmines still left over from the Bosnian War in the 1990s, so things could get much worse there before they get better. It’s estimated that recovery efforts in both countries could cost upwards of $4 billion.
This map (via) shows the incredible size of the affected areas:
There are a number of organizations working on flood relief for these folks, so please consider giving to one (or more) of them if you are able:
The Trag Foundation, in Serbia
The Novak Djokovic foundation, also in Serbia
The Mozaik Foundation, in Bosnia and Herzegovina
