Looks like he decided not to contest Abadi’s nomination in the courts after all:
He said his decision was aimed at preserving the country’s “unity”.
“I announce before you today, to ease the movement of the political process and the formation of the new government, the withdrawal of my candidacy in favour of brother Dr Haider al-Abadi,” Maliki said in his Thursday address.
Yes, it was all about preserving unity and had nothing to do with the fact that Maliki literally has no supporters outside of his immediate cronies, although I guess possibly his family still likes him (but that’s unconfirmed). Well, regardless of his reasons, at least he’s leaving without causing a fuss.
